Spot the Signs - Save a Life

Date: 8th September 2014

During Suicide Awareness Week, which runs from Monday, September 8th to Sunday, September 14th, Pieta House will be running a nationwide campaign to help people spot the signs of suicide.

This campaign will be rolled out using three formats, namely:

  • print advertising - our SIGNS of suicide creative will appear in The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, The Irish Examiner and The Irish Daily Star up until Saturday, September 13th
  • radio advertising - our SIGNS of suicide ads will air on both Newstalk and Today FM up until Saturday, September 13th
  • bus shelters - in Dublin alone our SIGNS creative will be seen in over 100 locations for a two week period while bus shelters in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Tipperary, Kerry, Wicklow and Kildare will also display the SIGNS of suicide poster

Research shows that more suicides are prevented by family and friends than by any organisation or institution, so Pieta House is targeting those closest to the person at risk. By giving the public the necessary skills to ‘Spot The Signs’ and make a referral to a support organisation, they aim to empower the people of Ireland to tackle the issue of suicide. 475 people died by suicide in Ireland last year alone - almost 10 each week.

Pieta House now has nine suicide and self-harm crisis centres throughout the country in counties Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Tipperary and Kerry. They have helped close to 3,500 people to date this year. More information and resources are available on Pieta House’s Mind Our Men website, www.mindourmen.ie.

Knowledge is power, and together we can help reduce the rate of suicide in this country.
